Curriculum Intent Statement

The key principles of our curriculum design aim to empower our children to:

  • Master the essential skills needed to succeed in today’s society
  • Appreciate the importance of learning
  • Become confident, independent individuals with a passion for learning
  • Show resilience when faced with challenges
  • Respect the diverse community and world they inhabit
  • Gain a broad cultural understanding of both our country and the wider world
  • Achieve academic success across all subjects, meeting or exceeding national expectations by the end of their primary education
  • Be ready for the challenges and opportunities of the next phase of their education
  • Set aspirations for the future, knowing that hard work and determination will help them achieve their goals

At Orchard View Primary Academy, we will provide a broad, engaging, and aspirational curriculum that is shaped by a deep understanding of our children and their needs. No matter their starting point, our children will acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in the wider world. Our curriculum is guided by our motto (yet to be created) and our values (to be confirmed). We will ensure that every child has access to opportunities that meet their needs and challenge them to reach their full potential, all while fostering a love of lifelong learning in a safe and stimulating environment.

Aspiration drives a challenging curriculum that enables every child to succeed and "dream big." A strong focus upon integrity and resilience will nurture learning behaviours such as setting high expectations, independent thinking, a growth mindset, and self-regulation. These qualities will help our children believe in their potential and take greater responsibility for their learning. The promotion of respect will instil a love for education, preparing our children for the next step in their academic journey and for life in their community and the wider world.

Core British Values, along with spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development, are woven throughout our curriculum. This ensures that students understand their rights and responsibilities, the importance of law and democracy, and the values that will help them succeed and thrive as well-rounded citizens in a rapidly changing world.

At Orchard View, we will base our curriculum on the National Curriculum while using the flexibility of academy status to tailor learning to the specific needs of our children. By placing children at the heart of curriculum decisions, we will create vibrant subjects and a rich learning environment that stimulates their thinking and senses. We also build meaningful connections with our local environment and history to foster appreciation and respect for the community. Outdoor learning and Forest School play a significant role in our curriculum, ensuring that all pupils experience activities that enhance cultural capital, enrich learning, and develop character and well-being. Themed events, guest speakers, and educational trips engage and inspire children, allowing teachers to explore subjects in greater depth for deeper understanding.

Our curriculum will emphasise fundamental skills in math, reading, writing, and spoken language, ensuring that these are imbedded and can be applied in various contexts. Across all subjects, the progressive acquisition of skills and knowledge ensures retention, reinforcement, and development, enabling children to know more, remember more, and achieve more. This approach ensures our curriculum is carefully crafted, allowing our children to make connections and embed both skills and knowledge. Subject content will be purposefully selected and explored in greater depth.
