Year 2
Welcome to 2G!A very warm welcome to all our wonderful 2G children and families! We are delighted to welcome you to Year 2 and are looking forward to a happy, exciting and successful year together.
In 2G, we believe that every child should feel happy, safe, valued and ready to learn. Our classroom is a place where we encourage one another, celebrate our successes and understand that making mistakes is an important part of learning. Throughout the year, we will work together to show our PRIDE values of Partnership, Respect, Integrity, Determination and Excellence in everything we do.
Year 2 is full of exciting opportunities! We will be exploring wonderful books, developing our confidence as readers, writers and mathematicians, asking questions as scientists, getting creative and discovering more about the world around us. Most importantly, we want every child to feel proud of themselves and excited about what they can achieve.
Thank you to all our families for your continued support at home. Regular reading and practising key skills make such a difference, and we really value the partnership between home and school. Your child's class teacher should always be the first port of call when communicating with the school, however our incredible Teaching Assistants are often on the door during the start and the end of the day - they are always happy to help or pass on messages on for you.
Reading at Orchard View Primary Academy

At Orchard View Primary Academy, we believe that reading is at the heart of learning. Becoming a confident reader opens the door to the whole curriculum, while reading for pleasure helps children to develop their vocabulary, imagination, curiosity and understanding of the world around them.
We want every child at Orchard View to see themselves as a reader. Throughout the school day, children have opportunities to enjoy high-quality books, explore a wide range of authors and genres, develop their reading skills and share their thoughts and ideas about what they read. Our aim is not only to teach children how to read, but to nurture a genuine love of reading that stays with them beyond primary school.
Reading at home is an important part of this journey. We encourage families to read regularly with their children and to make reading an enjoyable part of everyday life. This might mean listening to your child read their school book, sharing a bedtime story, visiting the library or simply enjoying a favourite book together. Talking about books is just as valuable – asking children what they enjoyed, what surprised them or what they think might happen next helps deepen their understanding.
Our PRIDE values are woven into our approach to reading. Children show Determination when tackling unfamiliar words, Excellence as they develop their fluency and understanding, Respect when listening to different ideas and Partnership when sharing books and reading together.
By working in partnership with our families, we hope to give every child the confidence, skills and enthusiasm to become a lifelong reader.

Spellings/ Phonics
If you wish to practice spellings at home, the 200 high frequency words or Year 2 common exception words are a great place to start. There are also a whole host of resources on the internet with one simple search.
We will be looking at our Year 1 phonics until February just to make sure those skills are embedded after a lot of hard work throughout the year.
Homework
We are excited to publish our 'Project Grid' for Year 2. This grid includes activities children can pick up and complete throughout a longer period of time, showcasing their projects in the classroom during a Show & Tell session.
The sharing of these projects will take over from the traditional 'Show & Tell', however if children have something particularly special to bring in, please talk to your child's class teacher.
